Naba Bilea Namaal-Tinga Caeser A. Afegera III, the Paramount Chief of the Zuarungu Traditional Area, has called on the government to properly demarcate the boundaries between the Bolgatanga East District and the Talensi District to avoid conflict in future.
He said there were some boundary disputes between the Bolgatanga East District and the Talensi District which required immediate attention to resolve and the government to take urgent steps to properly demarcate the boundaries bordering the two districts.
Failure to act quickly, he said, could place peaceful coexistence among the people of the two districts in jeopardy.
The Paramount Chief made the call when he addressed his people and other stakeholders at this year’s N’daakoya festival of the chiefs and people of Zuarungu in the Bolgatanga East District of the Upper East Region.
The N’daakoya festival is celebrated by the chiefs and people of Zuarungu in commemoration of God’s blessing for a successful farming season and marks the beginning of solicitation of God’s blessing for the next farming season.
This year’s celebration was held on the theme “The role of indigenes and social partners for peace, security, and development of Zuarungu.”.
Naba Afegera III also called for the physical planning layouts for Zuarungu to be made available by the District Assembly for transparency and guidance on the development of the area as it risked being plunged into haphazard building plans and possibly making the place inaccessible.
He cautioned staff of the Land’s institutions involved in the sale of government lands to private developers to desist as it would meet strong opposition when brought to his attention.
Dr Hafiz Bin Salih, the Upper East Regional Minister, in response, said plans were far advanced by the government to come clear on the boundaries of the Bolgatanga East District, and once that was finalised, he would inform the paramount chief and his people.
He called for calm ahead of the elections, adding that the development of every community was hinged on peace, and it was important voters comported themselves to maintain the peace of the country for sustainable development.
