In a historic achievement, the University of Gold Coast (UGC), founded by Dr. Gideon Titi-Ofei and his wife, Lady Olivia Titi-Ofei, has been conferred the prestigious Presidential Charter, Ghana’s highest academic accreditation.
The momentous ceremony was presided over by the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo who praised UGC as a top-tier institution in the fields of business, leadership, and innovation.
The Presidential Charter elevates UGC to the status of a fully autonomous degree-granting university, cementing its position as one of Ghana’s leading centres of academic excellence.
This milestone also reflects UGC’s unwavering commitment to shaping a generation of transformative leaders through Christ-centred education, innovation, and rigorous academic standards.
Established in 2004 by Dr. Gideon and Lady Olivia Titi-Ofei, the University of Gold Coast began as the African Centre for Leadership and Human Resource Development (AFRILEAD), a modest training institute.
Over two decades, the institution has evolved, rebranding first as the Graduate School of Governance and Leadership, then as Accra Business School, and finally becoming the University of Gold Coast.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Akufo-Addo commended UGC’s remarkable growth, highlighting its strength in business, management, cybersecurity, and international relations.
“The University of Gold Coast stands out as a beacon of excellence in Ghana, excelling in fields critical to the nation’s development and global competitiveness,” he remarked.
The Charter Ceremony brought together key figures who have played pivotal roles in UGC’s success.
In attendance were Professor Elvis Cornerstone, President of UGC; Mr. Kevin Titi-Ofei, Chief Operating Officer; and Mr. Saviour Nyamedie, Registrar.
Their leadership, alongside that of the founders, has been instrumental in propelling UGC to this historic milestone.
Prof Cornerstone, reflecting on the event, expressed gratitude for the government’s recognition and reiterated UGC’s mission: “The Presidential Charter is a call to greater responsibility. We remain steadfast in our vision of raising a golden generation of leaders who will transform industries and inspire global change.”
The Presidential Charter grants UGC full independence to design and deliver academic programmes, award degrees, and expand its influence both locally and internationally.
This autonomy will enable the university to continue offering globally competitive undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional programmes that bridge academia and industry.
The accreditation also positions UGC as a preferred destination for students and faculty seeking excellence in education, research, and innovation. It signifies confidence in the university’s governance, academic rigour, and its role in equipping graduates with skills to address complex global challenges.
