Mepe (V/R)-Ghana, Oct. 27, – Unilever Ghana PLC has sent goods and relief supplies to victims of the Akosombo Dam Spill at Mepe in the North Tongu District.
Among the merchandise are 500 Sunlight buckets and baskets, 500 Geisha pencils, mugs, and face towels, 500 Pepsodent T-shirts, 500 branded Annapurna bowls, and 500 Geisha practise books.
The spill victims will receive assistance from the remaining supplies, which include water purification equipment, ten IBC water tanks, Pepsodent Triple Protection 175G, and Closeup Complete Fresh 140G.
About 1,200 individuals in the district have been impacted by the leak and have been forced to relocate, according to Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for the North Tongu Constituency who received the items on behalf of the victims stated.
He then expressed his gratitude to Unilever Ghana for aiding the underprivileged.
He went on to note that the community would get a lot of use out of the donated items, especially the IBC water tank, as it has been hard for the residents to get portable water due to spills.
Speaking on behalf of the entire district, the district chief executive, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders, Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwa thanked Unilever Ghana once more for its assistance.
He called on Cooperate Ghana, philanthropists, diplomatic communities, individuals, and donors to follow Unilever Ghana’s humanitarian example and maintain a steady flow of funds to support their health and well-being in the 21 camps, in addition to urging everyone to make a donation, no matter how small.
In an interview, Mr. Henry Malm, Head of Communications and Sustainability at Unilever Ghana PLC, stated that the company’s purpose was to enhance the well-being, health, and confidence of the people it serves. For this reason, the visit to offer donations to the victims was conducted.
He clarified that since the breach could cause a disease outbreak, the contribution and on-site help were essential.
Although the materials sent by Unilever Ghana PLC to the affected individuals would not be adequate to solve every issue in every home, Mr. Malm reiterated that they would, in his opinion, help them maintain their hygiene and improve their wellness.
He continued by saying that the donated materials will help the district’s efforts to maintain health and hygiene because it’s a national disaster and the company has a corporate social duty to assist those in need.
According to Mr. Divine Osborn K. Fenu, district chief executive of North Tongu District, the district’s water pumps were turned off because of contamination. He also commended Unilever Ghana for the funds that will be provided to the victims.
He claimed that since there are the same issues with food, water, and bedding in every camp that houses the displaced, these things are essential for comfort in every camp.
Mr. Fenu went on to say, “The Ghana Health Service and the Member of Parliament supported the Health Directorate in bringing in some medical personnel from the Ghana Medical Association, under the direction of the Regional Chairman, to assist in setting up mobile clinics in at least six of the centres for their health safety, including isolation centres.”
