Tema-Ghana, Nov. 21, GNA – Tema Senior High School (Temascho), has celebrated its 62nd anniversary on the theme: “Enhancing Digital Technology Education in Ghana for Competitive Advantage.”
In an interview with Ghana News Agency at Tema, Mr. Daniel Nii Okai Biofio, the National President of the Tema Secondary School Old Students Association (TOSA), disclosed that the school’s chemistry laboratory was renovated last year by the association.
He said the resources were not enough to purchase some experimental equipment; hence, the 1973-year group came to support it with GHC 100,000.00 this year to be saved into the bank account, to accrue enough interest to purchase more equipment when needed.
He added that in the year 2024, there would be a different year group to implement another endorsement fund for the business department; therefore, every department in the school would have an endorsement fund specifically created to aid in running the departments well through the interest when gained.
Mr. Boifio added that two years ago, the school had lights fixed in the dormitories, classrooms, and on the streets, even though some had faults and were stolen; hence, the team would endeavour to fix them and replace the stolen ones.
He said the school’s management team was working hard to enhance their security models and also raising the fence wall of the school to prevent robbery cases in the school.
He said even though the school had a maintenance culture, the old students urged the school administration to maintain whatever they donated to them.
He acknowledged the old students for their support, saying that during “my three-year tenure after taking off, there has been provision of a water plant, an event centre, a regal washroom, and a commission of the visual arts department with equipped materials, among others.”
Anchorite Robert Kwofie, Global National Secretary of TOSA, emphasised that the theme for the commemoration based on technology advancement was a good one because the world had evolved, and the students must take their technology education seriously for a better future.
He also noted that for a person to benefit from the technological era, it was good to have a mobile phone, but students mostly misused such opportunities given them while in school.
Mr. Kwofie said there was, however, the need to take a look at the policy of no mobile phone usage in the SHS, adding that there had to be a monitoring process for them not to misuse such opportunities.
Also, he stated that science-based education was capital intensive, and that government alone could not finance it, hence, the old students should come together to help renovate the science lab for a better future.
He called on all old students to join the association by contributing to support the school’s development.
The anniversary was graced with a parade by the school’s cadet force and song presentations by the school’s choir, among other activities.
