The event was designed to promote healthy living through nutritious meal and to bring the benefits of proper nutrition to all Ghanaians, including the less privileged.
A study by the National Library of Medicines has shown that unhealthy diets contribute to the burden of noncommunicable diseases and premature mortality globally.
A diverse array of nutritionally balanced meals was prepared using Sankofa Natural Spices free of preservatives, MSG, and salt to promote healthy eating, and these dishes were served to all inmates.
Madam Rosemary Sackey, Marketing Lead for Sankofa Natural Spices, reiterated the purpose of the project, saying, “We have come to realize the need for everyone to eat right and eat well to be healthy.”
She said the project was borne out of their commitment to reach the less privileged and show them the love and care they deserve.
“Good Food For All” projects, also is to serve as a unique opportunity for inmates to engage with the outside world” she added.
Mrs Augustina Mensah-Fiadzo, Officer in Charge of James Camp Prisons, praised the initiative saying rehabilitation efforts have long been hidden from public view, and by engaging external partners, the prison now provided a window into the significant work being done to prepare inmates for life beyond its walls.
“We mandate safe custody, rehabilitation, and reformation. For too long, our work within the prison has been hidden. Today, the public sees our efforts to help inmates prepare for life beyond these walls,” she said.
She said after long periods of isolation, the inmates needed opportunities to interact, develop talents, and rediscover their potential.
Mrs Mensah-Fiadzo said by providing controlled and secure access to external partners, the prison was able to showcase the talents developed within its walls and offer additional support to the inmates.
Producers of Sankofa Natural Spices plans to extend the “Good Food for All” project beyond the prison walls by visiting communities and organizations in need.
Through cooking demonstrations and interactive exercises, the company aims to spread the gospel of healthy eating while engaging and uplifting those often forgotten by society.
The project is in line with the company’s purpose of changing the way people live by changing how they eat.
The event saw the inmate engage in different fun activities such as rapping and dancing, among others designed to make them feel loved and appreciated.
