Saki (Near Tema), May 8, CDA Consult – Several villages in the Greater Accra Region, notably Saki and its neighbouring settlements in the Kpone-Katamanso municipality, have experienced severe water shortages for more than six days.
Residents in Saki, Bediako, Bethlehem, Sebrepor, Community 25, and surrounding areas carried yellow gallons and basins in quest of water for domestic and commercial use.
The issue has also affected nursing mothers, health facilities, and schools in the afflicted communities, which explains why pupils in these areas were always late to school.
Ms. Patricia Ansong, a resident of the Bediako Community, told reporters that the problem was affecting many people in the community.
She claimed that residents would have to travel long distances to acquire water, and that the water sources they used for cooking and other activities were sometimes unknown, causing major health hazards.
Ms. Ansong reiterated that efforts to get water tankers to affected towns had been particularly difficult because of the high cost of transportation.
She further said that those with reservoirs were selling a gallon of water for between GHC 2.50 and GHC 3.00, a scenario she described as inappropriate given the current economic situation.
The electrical supply to the pump at the water depot in Kpong, Eastern Region, was tampered with, leading water to be unavailable to families on that supply line, according to an inquiry.
Locals were advised by officers from Ghana Water Company Limited’s Ashaiman East District that steps were being taken to restore water service to the affected regions as soon as practicable.
Meanwhile, multiple crisis meetings have been held at the Ghana Water Company’s regional office in Tema to seek solutions to the situation.
