The exercise was part of series of spiritual activities rolled out to mark the centenary celebration (100 years anniversary) of Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish in Bolgatanga.
The exercise was characterised by various spiritual activities such as singing, praises and prayers while walking large part of the journey from Bolgatanga to the Minor Basilica in Navrongo.
The Seven Sorrows Minor Basilica in Navrongo is the highest place of the Church and one of the Sacred spiritual places within the Diocese that Christians especially Catholic Church faithful go to seek for divine blessings, intervention, and indulgence.
The pilgrims were taken also through teachings of some aspects of the Catholic Church’s doctrine and created opportunities for them to receive the Sacrament of Penance through confessions.
The pilgrimage was also avenue for the parishioners to rededicate themselves to God and pray for renewed spiritual growth.
The Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish, established in February 1925, has turned 100 years in February 2025 and the Parish planned to climax the celebration on June 28, 2025.
The celebration is themed “Celebrating 100 Years of Walking together as Family of God”.
Apart from the spiritual nourishment, the pilgrimage to the Minor Basilica was also a demonstration that the Catholic Missionaries first settled in Navrongo in 1906 before moving to Bolgatanga in 1925.
The pilgrimage also fell in line with this year’s Jubilee Year, observed from December 2024 to November 2025 on the theme “Pilgrims of Hope”.
Delivering a homily during the celebration in the Minor Basilica to mark the end of the pilgrimage, Most Reverend Agyenta underscored the significance of the exercise to the physical and spiritual growth of Christians, particularly Catholics.
The Bishop noted that human life on earth was a pilgrimage, describing it a journey that demanded prayer, physical sacrifice and simplicity of life and conversions of hearts and reconciliation through confessions.
“Our life here on earth itself is a pilgrimage and we are all walking to our homeland in heaven and this life requires prayer, simplicity and detachment”, he said.
Bishop Agyenta advised the pilgrims to cultivate the spirit of love and forgiveness and return to God as often as they could to ensure that they were always closer to God.
