Bamiango (W/R)-Ghana, Sept. 2, GNA – Residents of the Bamiango Electoral Area in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region have appealed to the government to take urgent actions to renovate the dilapidated Bamiango District Council Primary School block.
They said part of the roof of the school had been ripped off by a severe rainstorm since last year, which endangered the lives of pupils and teachers whenever it rained.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) observed during a visit to the school that the doors and windows of the building was left opened, leaving the pupils to the mercy of the weather.
Most of the furniture used by the children, which was provided by the school’s Parents and Teachers Association (PTA), was not only in a deplorable state but woefully inadequate, compelling four pupils to sit at a desk during teaching and learning hours.
The situation, the residents said, had forced some of the parents to withdraw their wards to other schools to ensure their safety.
Some of the pupils, who spoke to GNA, said they were always gripped by fear anytime it threatened to rain, adding that they often had their items missing in the classrooms, since there were no proper doors to secure their stationery and other teaching and learning materials.
The pupils sometimes had to sit in groups of four or five on a single desk in their classrooms, a situation that did not allow them to concentrate very well during instructional hours.
When the GNA contacted the Paramount Chief of the Gwira Traditional Area, Awulae Angama Tu Agyan, he confirmed the issue and said through a self-help initiative, the community was able to purchase corrugated roofing sheets to fix part of the building which was ripped off some time ago.
He appealed to the Municipal Assembly and other organisations to come to the aid of the school.
Speaking to the GNA in an interview on the matter, Madam Dorcas Elizabeth Amoah, the Nzema East Municipal Chief Executive, said efforts were being made to renovate the dilapidated school block in the community.
She said the Assembly had sent its budget for developmental projects to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, for approval and once that was done the Assembly would commence work on the renovation of the block.
Meanwhile, Vice President Dr Alhaji Mahamud Bawumia visited the community during his campaign tour prior to the New Patriotic Party’s Super Delegates Conference and donated an amount of GHC40,000 to traditional rulers in the community to support them address various challenges, including the rehabilitation of the school.
