Accra-Ghana, Nov. 25, GNA – The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) says the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), is not on the verge of collapse.
In a statement, the NHIA said reports that the scheme was collapsing were false.
It said the Dormaahene Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu II, President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, only expressed concern about the current situation of the NHIS.
The statement copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra said, the Chief demonstrated concern and dedication to the long-term viability of the Scheme, for which the management of the NHIA was very grateful and appreciative.
However, it strongly disapproved of the media narrative that sought to create an impression of a collapsing NHIS due to lack of funds from the National Health Insurance Levy (NHlL).
“It was imperative to put on record that no government during the Fourth Republic has ever provided the NHIA with all the NHIL collected albeit enshrined in law,” it added.
It said the NHIA had consistently paid healthcare facilities an average of GHS150 Million every 30 days, especially over the past two years.
A phenomenon that has not occurred this frequently since the inception of the Scheme 20 years ago, it added.
“We wish to state unequivocally that the impression created by the said story is inaccurate and unfortunate,” it said.
The statement encouraged the media to be objective in their reportage and not to paint a picture that was considerable far from the truth as millions of Ghanaians continue to depend on the NHIS to access healthcare.
