Obuasi (Ash)-Ghana, Nov. 11 GNA – The Independent M/A Junior High School (JHS) from Obuasi East District emerged winners of this year’s edition of the AngloGold Ashanti Basic Schools annual quiz competition.
They secured 67 points to beat the SDA JHS of the Obuasi Municipal, which had 48.5 points.
For their prize, the school received five computers, three tablets, a projector and a set of educational materials made up of pens, exercise books, textbooks, Oxford dictionaries, backpacks, mathematical sets and a cash sum of GHc5,000.
Obuasi SDA, which placed second, also received five computers, three tablets and a set of educational materials made up of pens, exercise books, textbooks, Oxford dictionaries, backpacks, mathematical set and a cash sum of GHc 3,000.
The annual quiz competition among schools in the Adansi enclave aims at achieving the Educational Improvement Program Objective in the Socio-Economic Development Plan of AngloGold Ashanti.
Mr. Emmanuel Baidoo, Senior Manager, Sustainability at AngloGold Ashanti, in remarks at the awards ceremony, indicated that quality education and conservation of the environment was a core demand of the Sustainable Development Goals in the AngloGold Ashanti’s 10-year Socio-economic Development Plan (SEDP).
He said this year’s quiz competition focused on the environment and its related issues to teach and create awareness among the younger generation about fundamental issues affecting the world today.
He particularly, made reference to the UNESCO climate change educational quote, which explains that, education is an essential element of the global response and environmental issues and that, it was important to address the impact of environment degradation and encourage changes in their day to day activities.
Mr. Baidoo said AngloGold Ashanti, as part of its 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), would collaborate with Obuasi Municipal and Obuasi East District Assemblies to establish basic schools as Environmental Cleanliness Model, to help improve the knowledge, attitude and practice of environmental cleanliness among the people in the area.
The Mine would also construct eco-friendly public toilet facilities and community water systems to progress the efforts of Keep Obuasi Clean Campaign.
Mr Baidoo said the Mine was focusing on education with the objective of contributing to the increasing pass rates in the Basic Education Certificate Examinations in Obuasi.
This would be done through preparing the candidates adequately, building capacities for instructional leadership, support the construction of classroom facilities in basic schools, distribute literacy and numeracy materials while helping to facilitate and improve the teaching and learning of Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics Education.
Nana Amuanimaa Dede II, the Adansihemaa, who chaired the occasion, thanked AngloGold Ashanti for its immense contribution towards educational development in the Adansi enclave.
