Mr Kofitsey Martin Nyahe, the Municipal Chief Executive for Akatsi South in the Volta Region, said it is time to reflect on Ghana’s journey as a nation and to reaffirm the commitment to building a prosperous and inclusive society for all.
“It’s time to reflect on our journey as a nation, to honour the ideals that inspired our fight for liberation, and to reaffirm our commitment to building a prosperous and inclusive society for all,” he said.
Mr Nyahe made the call in an address delivered during the 67th anniversary celebration of Ghana’s independence on the theme: “Our Democracy, Our Pride.”
He said the theme resonated deeply with the essence of Ghana’s independence and underscores the fundamental principles, which included democracy, equality, and justice being the nation’s foundation.
Mr Nyahe called on all citizens to embrace the theme by paying tribute to the visionaries who fought tirelessly for the establishment of democratic institutions in the country.
“We honour the sacrifices of those who laid down their lives to secure the freedoms we enjoy today, and we recommit ourselves to upholding the principles of democracy in all facets of our national life,” he said.
On decentralised governance, he said the creation of 110 district assemblies in 1992, which included the then Akatsi District, marked a pivotal moment “in our democratic journey, empowering local communities to actively engage in shaping their development trajectories”.
Thirty schools with 30 contingents from each school are participating in this year’s anniversary.
Security officers and other key services institutions have been heavily represented to ensure the success of the event.
Traditional authorities, members from the clergy, assembly staff, head of decentralised institutions, among others have converged at the Akatsi RC park to mark the day.
