Tema-Ghana, June 1, CDA Consult – The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Afienya District, has uncovered 33 structures unlawfully connected to power by an unidentified customer in Gbetsile, Tema Region.
The discovery was uncovered on Tuesday, when the corporation launched a four-day revenue mobilisation campaign aimed at all client segments.
The illegality was uncovered after the crew assessed the state of their metres as part of the exercise, according to Mr. Daniel Mensah-Asare, District Manager for ECG Afienya District.
He claimed that it was during one of these metre checks that the group discovered that the metre, which was attached to one of the structures, had wires connecting to nearby structures.
Further investigation discovered an illegal connection in the form of a metre bypass, resulting in the client not paying the correct amount for the power utilised.
According to him, the owner of the structure ran when he saw the ECG crew, but the ECG team had access to the metre, which was outside his domain.
He stated that after speaking with residents, they discovered that they had been paying the owner of the metre for the power they used on a monthly basis, with an average payment of GHs 35.00.
According to the District Manager, ECG workers informed the other residents of the multiple infractions identified and then removed their supply from the service pole; the firm confiscated the service cable.
Another discovery of phoney metres and metres transferred from their intended locations to other settlements was made in another portion of Gbetsiley.
Mr. Mensah-Asare asked customers to keep their metre accessible to ECG personnel at all times.
He also warned against unlawful connections, saying that “potential perpetrators should be aware that ECG has the authority to prosecute for illegal connections, which may result in a jail term, a fine, or both.”
