Tema-Ghana, April 15, CDA Consult – No herbal remedy can cure tooth tissue loss, often known as ‘kaka’ in Ghana, Dr. Mensah Tabi-Amankwa, a Dentist at the International Maritime Hospital (IMaH), has revealed.
He warned that if there was a hole in the tooth, it needed to be replaced and that no amount of herbal medication would help. “People use all kinds of things to numb the pain, but if it is not replaced, it will progress to swelling,” he said emphatically.
Dr. Tabi-Amankwa made the statement during the weekly “Your Health, Our Collective Responsibility” programme, which is a Ghana News Agency Tema Regional Office initiative aimed at promoting communication on health-related issues and providing a platform for the dissemination of health information in order to influence personal health.
He stated that such swellings could migrate from the mouth to other potential places such as the facial space, which lies beneath the skin and muscles, and that if this happened, the patient would require at least two weeks of hospitalization and aggressive therapy to be saved.
He stated that such cases were always reported as emergencies because patients relied on herbal drugs, some of which were sold in vehicle and truck parks until they were unable to eat or had their faces bloated before going to the hospital.
According to the IMaH Dentist, some of the swellings ended up generating a blockage in the airways and the brain, making it difficult and putting the patients’ lives in danger.

He recommended the public report any problems with their teeth to a hospital rather than relying on such medications, adding that, ideally, individuals should go for check-ups twice a year to maintain comprehensive health.
Dr. Tabi-Amankwa reminded the public that the mouth was a vital window into the body, with indicators of pregnancy, hormonal changes, diabetes, and HIV, among other things, easily detectable during check-ups.
He urged pregnant women to have their teeth evaluated and cleaned by a dentist, noting that some women lose their teeth during pregnancy owing to hormonal imbalances and gingivitis.
Mr. Francis Ameyibor, Regional Manager of Ghana News Agency Tema, emphasized that helping to strengthen the health care system when one has the potential is a noble cause since you never know when you may need it, and the essential problem is that preserving life is a holy obligation to all humanity.
Mr. Ameyibor noted that “Your Health! Our Collective Responsibility” is a public health platform to teach every one of basic knowledge and maintain a healthy lifestyle, “eat healthy food, undertake regular physical and spiritual exercise, sleep well, and undergo regular medical check-ups.”
