The Upper West Regional Hospital (UWR) is currently leveraging its strength to provide quality healthcare services to the people of the area and beyond, Dr Robert Amesiya, the Medical Director (MD) has stated.
He indicated that the facility’s strength was in its quality equipment, as some of them were hard to find in some hospitals in other parts of the country.
“We have been crying so much for seed capital, but I think occasionally we should take a break and think of our strengths.
We have a lot of strengths in this hospital, which we are leveraging on, and our strength is that the hospital is well equipped,” Dr Amesiya explained.
The MD made these remarks at the maiden ceremony of the hospital to recognise over 40 of its staff being recognised and appreciated by the presentation of citations and certificates for their hard work and dedicated services in 2023.
Some individuals and institutions including the Upper West Regional Minister, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih, Joynews’ Upper West Regional correspondent, Rafique Salam and the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs, were also recognised with citations for their contributions to the growth of the hospital.
Dr Amesiya observed that the Hospital was one of the few in the country that offered dialysis services.
He added that the facility was also endowed with enhanced Information and Communication Technology (ICT) including over 800 secret cameras, and an electronic (facial or fingerprint) log-in and log-out system, which could also be maximised to improve the quality of health services they provided.
The MD said the hospital’s management had prioritised periodic preventive maintenance, to preserve the lifespan of the equipment.
Dr Amesiya, acknowledged that human resources were critical in maintaining and putting the equipment to good use, hence the need to appreciate the commitment of the staff to their work.
He said that would also motivate them to work harder to enable the hospital to contribute to realising the country’s dream of achieving Universal Health Coverage.
“Our mandate is to provide care to the people, but we need to motivate the people who provide the care,” Dr Amesiya stated.
He said due to their dedicated services, four staff had won national laurels – the second-best staff in change documentation in 2021, the Best Midwife award in 2022, and Most Outstanding Staff of the Ghana Health Service secondary category in 2023, with the MD winning the Excellent Leader award in the secondary category in the same year.
Dr Damien Punguyire, the Upper West Regional Director of Health Services, observed that four years after its commissioning, the hospital was living its mandate of delivering quality service to the people.
He commended the management of the facility for ensuring access to quality and affordable dialysis services, which he said had brought great relief to the people of the region who hitherto had to travel to other parts of the country to seek these services.
“We are not yet at the top, there is a long way ahead of us, and this celebration is just to pat you on the back, to show that we recognise the work that you are doing …,” he indicated.
Dr Punguyire encouraged the hospital staff to let the awards motivate them to do more and strive to be recognised in subsequent years.
Dr Hafiz Bin Salih, the Upper West Regional Minister on his part, said he recognised the potential impact of the hospital on the lives of the people of the region hence his decision to push for its commissioning in August 2019 though it was not fully completed.
He thought commissioning it at that time would put more pressure on the government to complete and ensure its make full operationalisation.
Mr Reagan Agyekum received the overall best staff award and was given a new Apsonic motorbike (Aloba) and GH₵2,000.00 from the Regional Minister.
Dr Sarah Naa Amuah Dodoo Braimah, was adjudged the First runner-up and received a chest freezer, with Madam Judith Bayong-Dumah following as the Second runner-up to receive a 43-inch flat-screen television set.
Madam Zenabu Salifu was adjudged the 3rd runner-up and took home a tabletop refrigerator and GH₵1,000.00 from the Regional Minister.
