Major-General Kamal Ishola Yusuf, Chief of Defence Accounts and Budget, Defence Headquarters Abuja-Nigeria, has commended the Ho Technical University (HTU) for remaining focused on imparting skills required for problem-solving.
“One crucial part throughout the evolution of this noble institution has been its ability to remain focused on imparting skills required for problem-solving and not just churning out graduates with paper certificates.”
Maj-General Yusuf was delivering the University’s Maiden Alumni Lecture Series dubbed: “Ho Technical University; a Springboard to Global Leadership.”
The Senior Army Officer, who is an alumnus of the then Ho Technical Institute, now Ho Technical University, said the institution had been a strong foundation for him and springboard to global leadership for many of them.
Maj-General Yusuf had his post-secondary education in the then Ho Technical Institute in the Volta Region, where he earned Royal Society of Arts Certificates in Business Studies with an Accounting Option from 1980 to 1984.
He said the institution’s strong industry connections and experiential or practical learning opportunities provided him with a network of talented individuals, who had become lifelong friends and colleagues.
The Senior Army Officer described the network created by the University for him as a valuable resource, offering him support, guidance, and opportunities for growth.
He emphasised the need for strong collaboration between the alumni so they could serve as true ambassadors of the institution as “it is essential to learn that working yourself up also depends on working together and seeing one another as support systems.”
Professor Ben Honyenuga, Vice-Chancellor of the University, said the lecture was a celebration of the collective achievements of the alumni, faculty, and students.
“It is an affirmation of our shared vision and values and an opportunity to reconnect, to inspire, and to be inspired,” he added.
The VC said the theme for the event reminded them of the vital role the institution played in shaping leaders who made impactful contributions both locally and internationally.
Professor Honyenugah said the theme also resonated deeply with their mission to provide world-class education and to nurture talents that would lead the charge in addressing the complex challenges of the 21st century.
