Takoradi-Ghana, Feb. 05, GNA – The Ghana Water Company Limited in the Western Region is facing challenges in the supplying potable water to residents of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.
The challenges are due to the inadequate freshwater inflows into the Pra Basin which is the main source of raw water for the Daboase Water Treatment Plant, the biggest Plant in the Region.
The Anankware River, which supplies raw water to the Inchaban Water Treatment Plant is equally facing freshwater inflow difficulties.
Nana Yaw Barima Barnie, Western Regional Communications Manager who disclosed this in an interview with the GNA, said activties of illegal miners upstream of the River Pra was componding the problem at Daboase as it was causing severe siltation at the plant’s intake.
He indicated that the high silt deposits have drastically reduced the volume of raw water available for abstraction.
Nana Barnie noted that the dry season currently being experienced had also exacerbated the problem of raw water unavailability.
The result of these developments, he said meant that the company was not able to produce enough water for residents, thus, worsening the already bad supply situation in the metropolis.
However, in response to this, the Region has reviewed its water demand management programme to bring equity to the water distribution exercise.
“It is disturbing, however, due to the erratic pumping regime, there are still customers who do not receive water during their rationing period,” he emphasized.
He said the management of the company recognised and shared in the pain of consumers and was doing everything it could to ameliorate their suffering, including dredging the intake of the Daboase Treatment Plant for free flow of water.
