Tema-Ghana, March 06, GNA – The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, has decorated educational institutions in the region for participating in the 66th Independence Day celebration held at Tema Sports Stadium.
Awards were given to Oninku Drive Number One School for emerging first; Weija Presby School for emerging second and Dangana Educational Complex School for emerging third for the basic school category.
The schools were decorated at the Greater Accra Regional Commemoration of March 6th Independence Day.
The maiden Regional Independence Day celebration was characterized by an impressive parade.
A total of 870 students drawn from 29 schools, and 240 men and women from the security services were on parade at the Tema Sports Stadium for the Greater Accra Regional Commemoration of Ghana’s 66th Anniversary Celebration.
For the cadet category, Tema Senior High School picked the first prize, Amasaman Senior High School the second prize, and Achimota Senior High School the third prize.
In the Senior High School (SHS) category, Accra Girls picked the first, Odorgonno SHS won the second prize, and Ada SHS picked the third prize.
The parade saw pupils of Bright Prince Academy receiving a special award for a splendid display during the match pass as a police cadet despite the ages of its contingent.
Mr Henry Quartey, the Greater Accra Regional Minister thanked the president for granting the permission for the region to host a consolidated celebration instead of the known district ones.
Mr Quartey said the theme for the celebration; “Our Unity, Our Strength, our purpose,” re-echoes that of yesteryears.
He called on Ghanaians to foster that purpose and determination to move the country forward.
Others who participated in the parade were the security contingents made up of the Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Police Service, Eastern Naval Command, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Ghana National Fire Service, and the Fifth Battalion of Infantry.
The 29 schools represented the 29 Districts in the Greater Accra Region.
The parade was under the command of Lieutenant Commander George Acquah, of the Eastern Naval Command.
The security officers, cadet corps, and contingents of the various school march briskly to the music provided by the Ghana National Fire Service Regimental Band to the cheers of spectators and dignitaries.
Pupils of the St John Methodist School gave a colourful and skillful gymnastic display, while a student of the Ada Senior High School gave a drum appellation in the Dangme language.
