Tema-Ghana, May 8, CDA consult – The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Tema Regional Command has joined the rest of the world in observing 2023 International Firefighters Day to remember their fallen heroes.
The event, held in the forecourt of the GNFS’s Tema Regional Office, marked the end of a week-long campaign across the region to raise awareness about the basics of fire and the work of firefighters.
The GNFS Tema Regional Commander, Assistant Chief Fire Officer I (ACFO1) Madam Doris Lamptey, who sponsored the event, highlighted that International Firefighters’ Day dates back to 1999, when members of the fire service were slain in the line of duty.
ACFOI Lamptey went on to state that this year’s theme, “Recognising the sacrifices of firefighters and our fallen heroes,” was chosen to honour Ghanaian firefighters who perished the previous year.
“And to thank all of our country’s firefighting officers for making the ultimate sacrifice in order to save lives,” she added.
The Regional Commander stated that the blaring of sirens and the lowering of flags at 12:00 p.m. during the event was a universal norm to show solidarity among all firemen worldwide.
She, on the other hand, underlined the significance of the public attending instructional exercises and learning about fire protection practises.
The problem with emergency phone lines, according to ACFOI Lamptey, exists because people do not pay attention to them, which is crucial.
She highlighted that if inhabitants of Tema Regional are unable to reach national emergency number 122 or fire service line 192, they should call the fire service control room at 0299340631.
Also emphasising that gas cylinders should not be restricted to a limited space such as a room, but should be placed outside so that if there is a leak, the air will blow it away, emphasising that even the smallest kindling of fire can cause harm in a contained space where ventilation cannot escape quickly.
Furthermore, the Ghana National Fire Service worked tirelessly to reduce fires in the country.
