President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated that Ghana’s security network has not abandoned its search for the culprits of the atrocious murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussien-Suale.
“The efforts of the law enforcement agencies to bring the killers of Hussein-Suale to book continues no matter how long it takes,” he assured, while addressing the closing session of the Third African Media Convention (AMC), in Accra.
The investigative journalist was shot dead in January 2019 while driving home.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unsolved while authorities search for the murderers.
According to media accounts, some unidentified men on motorcycles shot him three times, killing him instantly. The tragic incident occurred in Ghana’s capital, Accra, and shocked the media community given the West African nation’s outstanding reputation for press freedom.
The late Hussein-Suale was a member of Tiger Eye Private Investigations, which uncovered corruption in Ghana’s football leagues, resulting in a lifetime ban for Mr. Kwasi Nyantakyi, the former head of the Football Association
The undercover work drove the ‘BBC Africa Eye’ to produce a documentary about the incident after getting access to the investigation led by renowned investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, who runs Tiger Eye.
The African Editors’ Forum, the AMC’s organisers, had urged Ghana’s government to work diligently in tracking down and prosecuting Hussein-Suale’s killers in an address to the Convention delivered by its President, Churchill Otieno.
In his keynote address to end the Convention, President Akufo-Addo stressed his administration’s commitment to protect the rights and interests of Ghanaian journalists.
He said that the priority of the government was to ensure the safety of journalists.
“Freedom of the media is fundamental to the growth of any democratic society,” he noted, adding that his administration was bent on liaising with the media to advance the nation’s development agenda.
The three-day Convention was held on the theme: “Enhancing Freedom, Innovation and Environmental Sustainability in a Dynamic Media Landscape.”
It discussed the emerging technologies in the media landscape, advancing best practices amid the fast-evolving news industry and creating new revenue opportunities through partnerships.
The key highlights related to the state of the media in Africa, Artificial Intelligence and its impact on new media, bringing the newsroom into the business of news, and revenue and innovation – winning ideas for sustainability and growth.
