Gbi-Wegbe (V/R)-Ghana, Sept. 17, GNA – The Dzabe Youth Development Foundation (DYDF), a charitable organisation, has commissioned two mechanised boreholes with overhead polytanks to ensure access to potable drinking water for the Dzabe community in the Hohoe Municipality.
The construction of the boreholes and supply of the tanks came at a cost of GH¢182,000 over a period of two months.
Prior to the commissioning of the boreholes, majority of the community members have their source of water from the Dayi river, while few got theirs from the Ghana Water Company.
Mr Noel Francis Agodzo, Board Chairman, DYDF, noted that the huge amount of money being invested in the community through the Foundation should make an impact on lives of the members.
He noted that the boreholes were not only closer to homes but the water provided remained cleaner than the Dayi river and called for care for the project.
Mr Agodzo expressed gratitude to Larry Penner, a Canadian, for his benevolent support through the Entrepreneurship Development in Emerging Nations (EDEN) with Technical Support from Real Humanitarian in Canada.
He said, “we are not selling the water for profit, we are selling it so we can maintain it for a long time.”
Mr Agodzo said the DYDF was desirous to making greater impacts in the community, including plans to put up toilets and washrooms in all schools in the Municipality.
The Real Humanitarian, Canada and the Dzabe Youth Development Foundation, funded the project.
Mr Niiquaye Charles, DYDF Programme Director, said 79 participants had been taken through financial literacy training; out of which 54 participants had been supported with micro loans.
He said the participants would continue to benefit from business counselling and mentorship for a year.
Mr Niiquaye said 20 pieces of plastic chairs had been donated to the Gbi-Wegbe E.P Church as well as financial literacy training, borehole management and maintenance practices for the borehole committee and water vendors.
He said DYDF and its sponsor sought to enroll the youth into skills training in various trade areas such as hairdressing in the near future.
Mr John Yaw Amegashitsi, Assistant Director I, Hohoe Municipal Assembly, on behalf of the Municipal Chief Executive, said it was commendable that the Assembly received help from benevolent individuals and groups in providing support for communities.
He called for proper care and maintenance of the boreholes to serve their purpose and within or more than its lifespan.
Togbe Katabua IV, Sub Divisional Chief of Dzabe, expressed gratitude to the Foundation, donors and contractor for a marvellous work done.
He reiterated the need for education and called on parents to prioritise the welfare of their children and made sure they took keen interest in their wards stay in the classroom for better future.
A committee has been set to ensure the effective and smooth functioning of the boreholes.
