Kumasi-Ghana, Nov. 11, GNA – The Ashanti Regional Youth and Women’s wing Election of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been put on hold, following an injunction placed on the process by Constituency Executives of Manhyia South.
Manhyia South is yet to conduct its constituency election due to an injunction placed on the exercise by some aggrieved members of the party and ineligible to participate in the regional elections.
They are, therefore, unhappy that the party was going ahead with the regional elections without their participation hence the move to halt the process.
As at 14 hours on Friday, voting had still not started in an election originally scheduled to begin at 0700 hours.
This is because the Electoral Commission (EC), which was supposed to supervise the elections, did not turn up at the venue.
Checks by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) indicated that the EC was not willing to supervise the election because it had been served with a court injunction.
Mr Nurudeen Hamidan, Chairman of the Regional Elections Committee, was, however, positive that the election would take place before the close of day.
He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that lawyers of the party were engaging the EC to resolve the issue to pave way for the election.
He said the committee had not received any injunction purportedly served on the EC and was poised to conduct the election as soon as the EC showed up at the venue.
Mr Hamidan argued that the election could go ahead as long as two thirds of the delegates were present for the exercise as stipulated in the Constitution of the party.
