Agona Mensakrom (C/R)-Ghana, July 30, GNA – The chiefs and people of Mensakrom in the Agona East District of the Central Region have appealed to the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo to help provide a new six classroom block for the Methodist primary school.
According to the chiefs, the old, dilapidated building, could collapse anytime and the looming disaster should be prevented from happening to school children.
They said the provision of a new block would assist authorities of the school to abolish the on- going shift system which started last year June.
Nana Kweku Owiredu, Obaatan of Mensakrom and his Development Committee Members who took the Ghana News Agency round the dilapidated school block constructed in 1940s said the structure had become a death trap.
He noted that on the onset of the rains, the situation was affecting academic work which will eventually impact performance of the children.
Nana Owiredu was worried that the shift system became the only option when the School Management Committee and chiefs met over the issue to keep the school running.
According to Nana Owiredu , the system was not helping as the KG class had been closed indefinitely.
According to the Chief, a delegation of chiefs sent to the Agona East District Assembly many times to have the school renovated had yielded no result.
Nana Mireku said the chiefs could not sit down unconcerned for the education of children who were the future leaders to be truncated due to the bad nature of the school blocks.
The chief lamented that work on a 12-unit classrooms block for Islamic Primary and Junior High School which started in 2016 had also stalled and efforts to get the District Assembly to help find solution to the abandoned school project was yet to yield results.
Nana Kwesi Bomsomtwi, Okyeame of Mensakrom re-echoed calls to have the problem quickly solved to avoid any disaster.
He said with the introduction of the free Senior High School (SHS) policy, the children of Mensakrom should not be denied the opportunity to get access to secondary education.
Mr Kwesi Matah, Mensakrom Development Committee member regretted that the situation was seriously affecting the academic performance of the pupils.
All attempts to reach the District Chief Executive for Agona East, Mrs Janet Odei Paintsil for her comments on the matter proved futile.
