Tema-Ghana, March 5, GNA – Mr Henry Quartey, Greater Accra Regional Minister, has called for a smooth and friendly atmosphere during and after sports activities to mark Ghana’s 66 Independence Day Celebration.
He reiterated that the sporting field was an untapped potential with the ability to empower the youth, especially in the field of boxing and football as well as strengthen ties among the various community members.
Mr Quartey said this during a press conference to unveil the main boxers at the Tema Metropolitan Assembly.
The main bout, Universal Boxing Organization (UBO) Africa Championship, is between Sampson Segbeji and Victor Skemetor.
He encouraged residents to participate in all programmes lined up to mark the anniversary and also attend.
The Regional Minister mentioned that this was the first time activities characterizing the Greater Accra Regional Independence Day celebration had been scheduled to take place in the Tema Region so the residents must strive to justify the decision for Tema to host the rest of the region.
Mr Quartey thanked the presidency for their full support of the programme being held in the Tema Region and commended the various Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) for accepting the call for the programme to be held in the Tema Region.
He charged Mr Yohane Amarh Ashitey, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, to liaise with the industries in the Tema Region to build a gym in Kpone, Tema, and Ashaiman as part of Corporate Social Responsibility to promote boxing in the region.
Mr Ashitey lauded the Presidency and the Regional Minister for bringing the programme to Tema for the first time in many years.
He called on the Tema residents to attend the programme in their numbers and cautioned against any unacceptable behaviour that could result in chaos.
