Accra-Ghana, June 15, GNA – The Black Meteors of Ghana managed to hold the Pharoahs of Egypt in a 1-1 draw at the Alexandria Sports Stadium, in Egypt on Thursday.
A goal from Afriyie Barnieh was all Ghana needed to grab a share of the cake against the defending champions who enjoyed possession throughout the game.
The early minutes saw the West African side show some level of fighting spirit as they managed to create a scare in the game with their solid attack.
Coach Ibrahim Tanko and his men kept on knocking on the doors of the Pharoahs sharing passes like it was nobody’s business.
A skilful play from Fatawu Ishahaku led to a penalty in favour of the visitors as Skipper Afriyie Barnieh beautifully slotted in the ball to give Ghana the lead.
Egypt managed to get into the game, parading infront of the Ghanaian defense with their shooting practice technique.
Shot-stopper Danlad Ibrahim once again rescued his side from danger after he put up a brilliant performance to save a penalty in the 20th minute.
The Pharoahs were on top of their game, creating some goalscoring chances to break Ghana’s defence.
Few minutes to the end of the first half, the defending champions managed to grab an equalizer with Ghana’s Zubairu Ibrahim also being sent off after a dangerous tackle on an Egyptian attacker.
The second half was a heated session for the defending champions who came in as wounded lions who were struggling to find the net despite taking getting a goal in the first half.
Ghana adopted to the defensive style, cementing their defense with solid clearances.
After 90 minutes of exciting play, both sides failed to make good use of their chances as the game ended 1-1.
Ghana is caged in Group A, alongside hosts Morocco, Congo and Guinea.
The U-23 Africa Cup of Nations is slated for June 24 to July 8 in Morocco.
